Portrait Photography: Introduction

The portrait has been one of the go to types of photography since cameras were invented. Quite a novelty when first practiced in the 1840's,the sitter usually had to be helped to keep still with back and neck braces due to the need of comparatively long exposures.









The aim then was to produce an image that would well reflect ones self. Over the years as they became more and more common different styles and techniques have been used to create everything from fine art black and white to tacky tourist attraction souvenirs.

The 2 images titled Bold are from a recent commission I undertook for the ARC center in Stockton. Environmental portraits of over 60's showing how they chose to be seen and their own place in society,
